Long Crank 6.0L Ford F250 Powerstroke Diesel

"I stopped to get a quick bite to eat and when I went back out to my truck to start it, it had a long crank. I didn't think it was going to start, then it finally did. But it is getting worse!"

I can't tell you how many times a week we hear this type of scenario from people who own a 6.0L Ford Powerstroke Diesel. It is the same matter whether its an F250, F350, F450, F550, or an Excursion. Many times people will wait until the symptom gets worse, to where the truck won't start at all or they have to wait hours or even the next day until it does start. This symptom can turn into a crank, no start condition if it is not handled in a timely manner from start of original date of concern.

Get the problem taken care of when you have first sign of a problem. It will most likely cost less to address and repair the long crank problem at that time instead of waiting until it gets worse. Below is an image of an Injection Pressure Regulator for a 2005 6.0L Ford F250 Powerstroke that came into the shop for a long crank concern. The owner of the truck is a construction worker and uses his truck daily for work. He stopped at McDonald's for a quick bite, got back in his truck to get back to the job site and discovered that it almost didn't start.



This is one of many Injection Pressure Regulators that has gone bad due to poor scheduled maintenance. Changing the oil is cheap on a Ford Powerstroke Diesel. It should be done at least every 5,000 miles (in my opinion, every 3,000 if the odometer is over 100,000). When oil is not regulated properly, it cannot supply and pressurize the fuel injectors efficiently and leave the motor in a compromising situation to start.
